What is a Rights Respecting School?

The Rights Respecting Schools Award (RRSA) recognises achievement in putting the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) at the heart of a school’s planning, policies, practice and ethos. A rights-respecting school not only teaches about children’s rights but also models rights and respect in all its relationships: between teachers / adults and pupils, between adults and between pupils.

Why have Rights Respecting in School?

The UNCRC is very well embedded across the whole school. We, at Newton Farm, see rights as the bedrock and foundation of what we do in school. We want our children to demonstrate and model rights respecting behaviour so that they can make a difference. It is the job of schools to make sure that they have rich, memorable learning experiences that will shape their lives. Since embedding the UNCRC into the work that we do at Newton Farm, our attendance, behaviour and attainment have all improved.

What benefits does it have on children’s learning?

These are some of the benefits:

Children have developed an in depth knowledge of their rights and the school is continuing to take steps to deepen this understanding further. Children’s robust and meaningful involvement in school development at all levels was remarkably empowering for the children and was an enriching experience for the adults in the school community.
Children are able to explain how they Class charters were created and used. Rights respecting language and behaviour are modelled throughout the school so that Newton Farm is a truly interdependent community bound together by mutual respect.
We have found that it has boosted the overall curriculum. RRS has really strengthened the core of PSHE and really improved SMSC throughout the school, empowering children with particular reference to global awareness.
Lunchtime is calmer. Children are more likely to resolve their own problems before they seek help from a trained playground pal, mentor or adult. Children are empowered to give views on every aspect of their learning.
