This week Yew class has really been enjoying taking part in STEM week. During STEM week, we took part in a variety of experiments all relating to the concept of movement. In class, we designed and came up with ideas to create the ideal playground vehicle thinking about safety, practicality and fun! Here are some ideas and pictures of what we did during STEM week:
This week in RE, Yew Class learnt all about Buddhism and Buddhist Festivals. We learnt all about the Buddhist festival Vesak and why it is so important to Buddhists. Buddhists celebrate the festival of Vesak by making their own lanterns and lighting them on the first full moon of May. In class, we had a go at making our very own lanterns to celebrate the enlightenment of the Buddha.
This week Yew class went to the science museum! We explored the medicine galleries and the wonderlab where we were able to watch experiments, take part in some experiments and even learn about the solar system.
This week Yew class was lucky enough to go to see the London Symphony Orchestra at the Barbican Centre. We learnt all about the great composer George Gershwin and his success as a songwriter and classical composer. On Monday, the children in year 3 learnt about George Gershwin’s musical influences Marcel Ravel and Nadia Boulanger and we made a musical piece influenced by Gershwin’s ‘American in Paris’.
The following day we went to see the LSO and the children thoroughly enjoyed learning about George’s Journey and seeing the wonderful orchestra in real life!
In reading this week, we have started our new book The Accidental Prime Minister. While learning all about the responsibilities that come it’s being Prime Minister we thought we would have a go at running for Prime Minister! Here are some pictures of the children creating their own PM Manifestos!
This week Yew class learnt all about the country of Romania for our international day stall. We asked Miss Cristescu to speak to us about her culture and traditions and learnt a lot about Pysanky eggs in the run up to Easter. On Friday, we took our turn in the international day fair/carousel and learnt about a variety of cultures including Brazil, Argentina, Morocco, Kenya, Portugal and many more!
This week Yew class have been celebrating Black British poets for Black History Month. We have been reading poems by Valerie Bloom which inspired us to write our own poems about nature. Some of us were even chosen to present our poems to the entire school in our celebration assembly on Friday.
Year 3 have been leaning about light and in our last lesson we investigated reflection. We used mirrors to complete mazes with light.
This week Yew class started their first independent write in English. They created their own stories about a made up character and their adventure in the Place Between (based on the book we are studying in class). All students tried really hard and did their very best!
This week Yew class have started their dance and gym class and have been really enjoying engaging with this!
