Mathematics

At Newton Farm, our Mathematics curriculum has been developed to ensure every child can achieve excellence in Mathematics. We aim for the children to become confident, developed and numerate mathematicians who can apply a range of concepts.

Children will experience a sense of awe and wonder as they solve real life problems, discover various solutions, and make links between different areas of Mathematics. It provides pupils with a deep understanding of the subject and the world around them through a variety of manipulatives. This ensures pupils fully understand and make progress in their learning. We challenge the children to make rich connections across distinct mathematical domains and to use their strong factual and procedural knowledge to help solve problems.

Topics Covered

Throughout their journey through the school children will cover and build on their understanding in:

  • Number and Place Value
  • Addition and Subtraction
  • Multiplication and Division
  • Fractions, Decimals and Percentages
  • Algebra
  • Measurement
  • Properties of Shape
  • Position and Direction
  • Statistics
  • Ratio and Proportion

Implementation

At Newton Farm we use our own maths skills progression map, that links to the National Curriculum, across all key stages. Children are taught Mathematics four times a week for an hour. During these sessions, the lesson follows a systematic sequence which is, fluency, reasoning and challenge trees. This allows children to practice the skill, implement it in a reasoning or problem solving question, and then challenge their thinking. The challenge tree questions can follow a variety of sentence stems such as, spot the mistake, true or false, missing numbers and always, never, sometimes.

Our curriculum for this subject is a scheme of work developed by Newton Farm based on a combination of "Maths Mastery" and "White Rose" schemes of work.
